What Makes This Class Different?
Message from Instructor Johan Bos
So, why this class? Over the years I’ve been through the transition of five production formats. A format is the medium on which a film or video project is recorded. The changes I’ve seen took me from 16mm film through to the digital formats we have today. Even though the breakthroughs in technology have brought advantages I have also seen some disadvantages. The digital age with its affordable video equipment has made it possible for anyone to get into the production business and produce a film or video. Unfortunately I have seen too many cases where someone with a great idea gathers the equipment, shoots and edits a film, and empties their life's savings, but to no success. So, what goes wrong?
Going from film to tape to digital has given me a great deal of knowledge and experience. I learned the basics, then the equipment, then the building blocks of a skilled profession along with the business side of the industry. When I first decided to get into the film business 30 years ago, it cost close to $80,000. And that was for the basics—no bells and whistles at that price. Needless to say I took my decision very seriously. I took every opportunity to learn from those working in the business. Today I see too much faith being put onto the digital equipment and not enough time spent on production knowledge, all to often putting the cart before the horse.
So “Why This Class?” Equipment is the tool, not the creator, and a great idea is not enough. Anyone that has had success will tell you that “everything successful is a plan carried through by knowledge.”The steps are research, planning, organization, hard work, professional skills, and business knowledge. This workshop teaches skills in each of these steps, giving you the tools needed to be successful. I’ve applied these skills, as have others, and have found many successes. The film business is a business and should make you money just like any other business.
I hope to see you in class!
Success— Johan Bos
